Let’s Talk Engagement…

By now you’ve all probably heard about Instagram’s algorithms/engagement issues, amiright?

Before Instagram rolled out their algorithms, people were able to see posts in chronological order creating instant engagement for everybody. But no… Instagram had to go ruin it for everybody especially us bloggers/influencers that really depend on engagement. So what happened? Instagram started ordering posts that show up on an individuals feed based on what they “think” you would like to see. By doing this, a lot of people were actually missing the posts they wanted to see, creating lower engagement for the person posting the photos. Let’s compare some of my posts before and after the algorithm….

As you can see, I could easily get over 1,000 likes prior to the algorithm…

These are a couple of my worst posts….. I’m not afraid to share it either because it’s real and it’s what is happening….

So what did people do? Naturally, they started trying to come up with ways to “get around the algorithm”. Whether the rumor was to post more/less, post at a certain time, or give people what they want to see, the algorithm was still there at the end of the day. So now what?

Bloggers started these “Instagram Pods” which in a nut shell was like a DM group chat, creating a way for bloggers to come together to increase engagement on their posts. The point of them was to try to get engagement on posts quickly, because rumor has it, the faster engagement happens, the more likely the post is to hit the “explore” page.  Basically, once somebody posted a photo, they would send it to these group chats and the other members of the chat would go like/comment on the post right away. Great, cool…finally a way to get around the algorithm! THINK AGAIN….

Engagement continued to be low so of course, more rumors. “Stop using DM pods because Instagram is cracking down and shadow banning people who use them or people who use the same hashtags over and over”. So of course, what did people do? took a break from pods, left them completely, switched up hashtags or stopped using them, or took a 3-5 day break. NOPE….still bad engagement.

At the end of the day, we don’t know what motives Instagram has, we don’t know the entire scoop about the algorithm, DM pods, the engagement issues happening….so it would be cool if people stopped making up rumors of what Instagram is doing and/or how to get around it.

I get it, trust me. I’ve been so annoyed, and discouraged from all of the new (and old) Instagram issues. I know the importance of having a good engagement for sponsored post opportunities but you know what I have also learned?  That sometimes the relationships you build and the content that you post is always going to be the most important. My engagement has been really low, lower than it’s ever been but I still have opportunities coming in (maybe even more so now than ever) because I continue to show talent through work and not always likes/comments. On the other side, I get it, I really do. This isn’t even my full-time job and I’m stressed, so I can’t even imagine the ones that do this for a living. Some people are lucky, they don’t have these issues which again is something nobody knows why or how.

So, instead of dwelling on Instagram and all of it’s issues, just focus on your content, the relationships you build through your work, be real and everything else will fall into place.
